Naula’s Story – The Girl Who Inspired a Movement

Naula, a brave young girl from Pallisa District, was diagnosed with retinoblastoma—an aggressive form of eye cancer. Her family, struggling with poverty and limited access to healthcare, had no idea where to turn. By the time her case reached us through community networks, her condition was heartbreaking.

Doreen, a mother of four and the founder of Naula Children’s Foundation, could not look away. She knew that something had to be done and had to be done real quick. The next morning, Naula was urgently evacuated to Ruharo Referral Hospital, accompanied by her father and a caretaker who could help bridge the language barrier.

At this time, the cancer had already taken its toll—her eye was at the stage of falling out. Tragically, the disease had spread to her brain. Despite the best efforts of doctors and the unwavering support from Doreen’s friends and community, Naula underwent life-altering surgery, removing both her eyes as the tumors were too many in her eyes leaving her completely blind. Today, she remains in the hospital, receiving care and preparing for end-of-life treatment (Palliative care). We have been able to give her some relief, BUT We were too late to save her Life! WE DO NOT WANT TO EVER BE TOO LATE AGAIN!!

Our Pain, Our Mission

90% of children with retinoblastoma can recover if treated in time. But Naula came to us too late. We wish we had found her sooner. We wish her family had known where to seek help. We wish we had been there before the cancer spread. But we weren’t. And now, we live with the painful reality that we couldn’t save her sight—or her future. Through Naula Children’s Foundation, we refuse to let another child suffer this fate. We want to ensure that every parent knows that help exists. We want to bring hope to children who feel forgotten. We believe in the power of humanity, kindness, and collective love.

Naula’s parents could not afford the expensive treatment that might have saved her. Without intervention, she had no hope. But you can help change the story for the next child. With your support, we can provide timely medical care, raise awareness, and give children like Naula the fighting chance they deserve. No child should suffer because of poverty. No child should die because help came too late.
